The Three Part Driving Test

The test comprises 3 parts: theory, hazard and practical. You must pass all 3 to complete and pass your test and be free to drive alone on UK roads.

The Theory Test

You will be asked 50 computer-generated random multiple choice questions from a pool of 963, 43 of which must be correctly answered for you to pass. Touch screen technology is used.

The Hazard Perception Test

You are presented with a series of 14 one-minute silent video clips. Each clip illustrates potential driving hazards - road conditions, pedestrians or other road users. There are 15 hazards to identify, and you're up against the clock; the more promptly you answer, the higher your score. You must score a minimum of 44 marks out of a possible 75 to achieve a pass.

Show Me Tell Me

You will be asked two questions pertaining to the vehicle you intend to drive, such as "Show me the level of brake fluid is within the safe range" and, perhaps, "Tell me how you know your brakes are working prior to commencing your journey."

You will also be required to read a vehicle number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres.

The Practical Driving Test

Whilst you are driving, the examiner will access your overall driving performance, in general and during requested set maneuvers. You are allowed up to 15 minor faults, 16 or more resulting in failure; however, one single serious or dangerous fault will mean immediate failure.

In addition to general driving you will be required to undertake two of the following reversing exercises selected by your examiner:

  • reversing around a corner
  • turning in the road
  • reverse parking
  • bay parking

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise. The examiner will typically extend his arm, palm up and request "Stop."

The test lasts approximately 40 minutes.
